When Life is in Between: Trusting God’s Timing and Taking Small Steps

Week one: The Messy Middle, Weekly notes

Most of life doesn’t happen on the mountaintop. It happens in the meantime.

Whether you’re waiting for your career to fall into place, or your soul is yearning for the family you’ve always dreamt of, we all know the tension of waiting and transition. The in-between seasons stretch us. They expose our doubts. They slow us down in ways we don’t always want.

I’ve been in my own messy middle for longer than I’d like to admit—and that’s the most frustrating part. If it were up to me, I’d be past the struggle by now. On my timeline, the questions would be answered and the waiting would be over. Instead, most days feel slow and mundane. I find myself asking: Is this all there is, God? What if I’m supposed to do more with my life?

There have been seasons where I waited well, and others that have been excruciatingly painful—awkward, bumpy, and at times, plain ugly. And yet, even here, God has been present. I’ve noticed His gentle nudges, the quiet reminders that He is never late or early but perfectly on time.

You can prepare the soil and bury a seed but you must trust the process. Graphic with quote about growth and trusting the process in seasons of unknown.
Someday is made up of a thousand right nows. From Book Now and Not Yet

I don’t say that lightly. It’s taken wrestling and a lot of honest prayers. But in the meantime, I’m slowly learning that even the smallest, intentional steps matter. Someday is really made up of a thousand small “right nows.”

That’s why I’m starting this new series: Weekly Notes for the Messy Middle. Each week, I’ll share a short reflection—part encouragement, part question to consider—little notes I’m gleaning from books, counseling, and the quiet processing of daily life.

My hope is that these notes remind you you’re not alone in your own meantime. We’re all walking through it in different ways, and sometimes all we need is a gentle reminder: the waiting is not wasted.

What the Lord is Teaching me here:

  • You can prepare the soil and bury a seed, but you must trust the process.

  • Seeds grow in silence before they ever break through.

  • Even the small action in the mundane is moving forward.

  • “We won’t arrive at someday’s harvest without sowing today.” (from the book, Now and Not Yet)

  • What am I planting today, even if I can’t see the fruit?
